There’s Been Another Star Trek Series Announced…

And guess who’s going to be the main character.

Yup, that’s right. Sir Patrick Stewart announced at Star Trek Las Vegas this weekend that he will be reprising his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard
According to the article linked above, Sir Patrick had the following remarks:
“I will always be very proud to have been a part of the Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course… It is an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions with him. ”
Personally, as the British would say, I am quite chuffed with this news. While my favorite Star Trek series now is Deep Space Nine, The Next Generation is the series that holds the most nostalgia for me, since it’s the one that I grew up with. Picard also ranks pretty highly on my list of favorite captains, so getting a continuation of his story is quite exciting to me.
We don’t have a lot of information as to a release date as of yet, but we do know that it will be airing on CBS’s streaming service. We also know that Alex Kurtzman, who served as an executive producer for the Star Trek reboot films as well as Discovery, will be serving the same role for this yet-unnamed series.
The only other thing I really have to say at this point is that I wish that shows didn’t have to be written or filmed, since I really wish I could watch it right now.

Star Trek: Discovery Is Delayed, And I Am Sad

1hwo65

Well, this is disappointing. According to EW, the premiere date for Star Trek: Discovery has been pushed from this upcoming May to…we don’t know when.

The series, which is set to take place a few years before the original series, recently cast The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green for the lead role. It was supposed to have premiered next month, but was pushed back to this upcoming May last September. This, combined with the fact that Bryan Fuller stepped down as showrunner in October, doesn’t really fill one with confidence.

They did announce that they’ll start production next week, however. They also announced that Sarek (aka Spock’s dad) will be playing a major role in the series, and will be played by actor James Frain. This does provide some hope, since I don’t believe that they would be making casting announcements for a show that won’t see the light of day. According to a statement relased by CBS:

“Production on Star Trek: Discovery begins next week. We love the cast, the scripts and are excited about the world the producers have created.  This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it’s best for the show.  We’ve said from the beginning it’s more important to do this right than to do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn’t beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows.”

So it does look like we’ll be getting Discovery, just not as soon as we had hoped.

Still, the fact that they pushed it back again, without giving us a release date, doesn’t bode particularly well. On the other hand, it may actually turn out to be a good thing if it results in a better program.

Time will tell.

New Star Trek Series Coming in 2017

star trek

In news that has recently made me squeal at a pitch only audible to dolphins, there is going to be a new Star Trek series starting January of 2017. You have no idea how excited I am about this. Apparently, it’s going to feature an all new cast and stories, so it doesn’t sound like it’ll be a reboot or a remake.

I am extremely excited about this. Star Trek is a major part of both my and my sisters’ childhoods. Our mom used to watch the original series back when it originally aired, so we used to watch Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager together back when they aired. I saw First Contact (my second favorite of the Trek movies) in the theater, and the soundtrack to that movie was one of the first CDs I’ve ever owned. So,yes, very excited about this.

This is definitely something that I will be following, and will be providing updates on this blog as they become available. In the meantime, I think I’ll go watch me some original series episodes. To Netflix!
