The New Star Trek Series Now Has A Title

Shiny logo.

Remember how a new Star Trek series was announced last November? Well, we finally got a title for said series, and that title is Star Trek: Discovery.

Quite interestingly, the series is not set in the alternate universe of the reboot films, but rather in the “prime” universe (i.e., the one that all the other series take place in). It follows a brand new ship (the USS Discovery) with a brand new crew. According to the article above, “[t]he new series will not be episodic, but will instead tell stories like a novel chapter by chapter.”

They also released a short teaser, which gives us the first glimpse of the new ship (though, as also noted in the linked article, this isn’t necessarily the final design).

I am ridiculously excited for this. As I may have mentioned before, Star Trek was a huge part of my childhood. Seriously, the last time I got together with my sisters, we spent a not inconsiderable amount of time watching the movies. So, upon hearing more news about this series, I basically had this reaction:

OH MY GOD

Star Trek: DIscovery (being abbreviated as DSC, basically to avoid obvious STD jokes) is set to air January 2017. The premiere is going to air on CBS, after which it will exclusively stream on their All Access service.

Shut Up And Take My Money: NES Mini

NES Mini

As I may have mentioned before, my dad likes to post interesting things about video games he comes across to my Facebook page. Today, he posted this, an article about a miniature NES console. And now I need it in my life.

The NES Mini, as it’s currently being called, comes pre-loaded with thirty classic NES games. According to the above article, the games are as follows:

-Balloon Fight

-Bubble Bobble

-Castlevania & Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest

-Donkey Kong & Donkey Kong Jr.

-Double Dragon II: The Revenge

-Dr. Mario, Excitebike

-Final Fantasy

-Galaga

-Ghosts’ N Ghoblins

-Gradius

-Ice Climber.

-Kid Icarus

-Kirby’s Adventure

-Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, & Super Mario Bros. 3

-Mega Man 2

-Metroid

-Ninja Gaiden

-Pac-Man

-Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream

-StarTropics

-SUPER C

-Tecmo Bowl

-The Legend of Zelda & Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

I’m especially excited about the original Final Fantasy. I do have the Final Fantasy Origins edition that was released for PS1, but have never really had a chance to play the original version.

The NES Mini is set to release on November 11 for $59.99, which actually isn’t that bad of a price. Before seeing it, I would have expected it to retail for $100 or more.

Check Out This Awesome Live Action Version of P.T.

Were you as disappointed by the cancellation of Silent Hills as I was? Konami scrapping the Guillermo Del Toro/Hideo Kojima headed addition to its Silent Hill series made a lot of people angry. Let’s face it: there hasn’t been a good Silent Hill game in years, and Konami seems to be more interested in pachinko machines these days.

Well, a group of filmmakers on YouTube called Oddest of the Odd, have basically taken P.T. (the “playable teaser” for the game) and made a live action adaptation.

This Just In From “Shut Up And Take My Money” News

mighty need

I have recently learned that there is an Etsy store called GameGuardians. Why is this important, you ask? There are tons of Etsy stores, some more successful than others.

Well, my friends, what makes this Etsy store unique is what it currently being sold in the store. You see, the proprietor of the store is selling handmade plushies of Falkor the luck dragon, from The Neverending Story:

falkor

That is what it looks like. I honestly thought it was a still from the movie until I took a closer look at it. Major props to the artist at GameGuardians who created it.

The artist, Laura Hosler, has apparently received about 1500 request from people wanting their own luck dragon; however, she can only put out about 15 per month, so the waiting list for one would be extremely long. However, for the more crafty among us, she will also be putting the pattern on the storefront for anyone who would like to make one of their own.

It’s worth checking out the rest of her store as well. She has some other dragon patterns up for sale that are both really cool and absolutely adorable.

Idris Elba May Be Playing Lead in Dark Tower Movie

dark tower

Apparently British actor Idris Elba is the frontrunner to play Roland Deschain, the lead character from Stephen King’s The Dark Tower novels, in the upcoming film adaptation.

First off, I had actually completely forgotten that there was an adaptation of the books coming, which, shame on me as they are some of my favorite novels in existence. Second, I think Idris Elba is a fine choice. He is a very good actor, and about the only reason the incessant Rainbow SIx: Seige ads on YouTube have yet to break my will. Seriously, the man could read from a phone book and I wouldn’t get bored.

OF course, nothing is set in stone at this point, and it could very well not happen. Either way, though, I will still be looking forward to the movie and am excited to see what they do with it.

MST3K May Be Coming Back

take my monty

Holy crap! First Star Trek is returning to TV, and now they’re planning to bring back Mystery Science Theater 3000? Do you have any idea of how happy this makes me?

Mystery Science Theater 3000, for those who are unaware, was a low-budget series created by comedian Joel Hodgson in 1988. It started on a local Minneapolis station until it was eventually picked up by the Comedy Channel (which would later become Comedy Central), then moved to the SciFi Channel, before it was cancelled in 1997. It followed mild-mannered janitor Joel Robinson (Hodgson), and later Mike Nelson, who was shot up into space by his mad scientist employers as part of an experiment: he was forced to watch the worst movies ever made to see how long it would take to drive him crazy. He and his robot friends Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo would make hilarious comments throughout the movies to try and keep their sanity.

Of course, to bring the series back, they do require funding. To that end, Joel Hodgson has started a Kickstarter page. The goal is $2 million by December 12th, and as of this writing, it is currently at $968,805. Click the link above if you’d like to pitch in. I know I’m definitely going to as soon as I get my next paycheck.

New Star Trek Series Coming in 2017

star trek

In news that has recently made me squeal at a pitch only audible to dolphins, there is going to be a new Star Trek series starting January of 2017. You have no idea how excited I am about this. Apparently, it’s going to feature an all new cast and stories, so it doesn’t sound like it’ll be a reboot or a remake.

I am extremely excited about this. Star Trek is a major part of both my and my sisters’ childhoods. Our mom used to watch the original series back when it originally aired, so we used to watch Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager together back when they aired. I saw First Contact (my second favorite of the Trek movies) in the theater, and the soundtrack to that movie was one of the first CDs I’ve ever owned. So,yes, very excited about this.

This is definitely something that I will be following, and will be providing updates on this blog as they become available. In the meantime, I think I’ll go watch me some original series episodes. To Netflix!

Why I hate the phrase “guilty pleasures.”

I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. If you fucking like something, like it. That’s what’s wrong with our generation: that residual punk rock guilt, like, “You’re not supposed to like that. That’s not fucking cool.” Don’t fucking think it’s not cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” It is cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic”! Why the fuck not? Fuck you! That’s who I am, goddamn it! That whole guilty pleasure thing is full of fucking shit.

-David Grohl

So, guilty pleasures. It’s a phrase that a lot of people tend to throw around. It’s something that’s based around the idea that there are just certain things we aren’t supposed to like, or at least like seriously.

In case you couldn’t tell, I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Grohl: Guilty pleasures are bullshit.
