Welcome to The Trailer Park! This week, I’m taking a look at the trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane.
The trailer features three people (one of whom is John Goodman) in what appears to be some kind of underground bunker. It starts of somewhat light-hearted, with the three playing board games and whatnot, as the song “I Think We’re Alone Now”
The film actually started as a script written by John Campbell and Matthew Stucken called The Cellar. Paramount Pictures purchased the script in 2012 and, under J. J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot, was retooled into a followup to Cloverfield.. It doesn’t look like it’s being set up as a sequel to Cloverfield, but rather as a spiritual successor to the 2008 found footage horror movie. It is being directed by Dan Trachtenberg, and being producced by J. J. Abrams.
From my research, the film appears to follow a young woman who wakes up in a cellar after a car accident. She belives that she’s been kidnapped by a crazy survivalist (played by John Goodman), who insists that the world has been hit by a chemical attack that’s rendered the surface uninhabitable. Of course, things may not be as they seem.
I’m not particularly hyped for this movie. I saw Cloverfield back when it was still in theaters and thought that it was all right, but not particularly groundbreaking. I do, however, like John Goodman as an actor, and he is appropriately creepy in this trailer. I also like the fact that they didn’t go with the found footage angle with this followup because, let’s face it, that’s become extremely cliched.
10 Cloverfield Lane is set for a theatrical release on March 11.
